Dad Shoe 101 is the “class” created by Dad Shoe Deals to teach you all about dad shoes. We strive to offer in-depth answers to questions like, “What are the best dad shoes of all time?”
Lesson Plans
- We’ll ask, “What are the best dad shoes of all time?” and discuss why it isn’t always easy to answer this question.
- We’ll list the 50 top dad sneakers released since 1982, the year when the first dad shoe emerged. We’ll present them in chronological order rather than ranking them to give you a greater sense of dad shoe history.
- We’ll share what makes our favorite dad shoes so special. We’ll also reveal whether brands created subsequent versions of classic dad sneakers or released them as retros.
What Are the Best Dad Shoes Ever?

When it comes to dad sneakers, beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder. It’s what makes it so difficult to answer the question, “What are the best dad shoes of all time?”
Just read through the online reviews for a quintessential dad shoe like the Nike Air Monarch IV. Some people call it “the best dad shoe ever.” Others describe it as “too bulky” and “very uncomfortable.” It highlights the divisiveness of debates over the best dad sneakers.
With this in mind, we fully understand that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to the question, “What are the best dad shoes ever?” Still, we aren’t going to let that stop us from trying to put together a comprehensive, chronological list of the most essential dad sneakers released since 1982, which was when the very first dad shoe hit stores.
So, which dad shoes ultimately deserve to be included in a collection of the best dad shoes of all time? Keep reading to see the 50 greatest dad sneakers of the last 50 years.
How We Selected the Best Dad Shoes

Before we get going, let’s quickly break down the criteria that we considered when answering the question, “What are the best dad shoes of all time?” and selecting the top 50 dad sneakers for this list. These key factors all played an important part in which dad shoes made the cut:
- When dad shoes were released
- Which dad shoe brands designed them
- The impact they had on sneaker culture
- How popular they eventually became
- Whether their influence lasted for more than a year or two
- Which unique or innovative features they included
- How many subsequent versions they inspired
- How likely we were — and still are! — to wear them
New Balance 990

- Originally Released: 1982
- Key Features: Pigskin suede and mesh upper, Motion Control Device in heel, Vibram outsole
- Subsequent Versions: New Balance 990v2 (1998), New Balance 990v3 (2012), New Balance 990v4 (2016), New Balance 990v5 (2019), New Balance 990v6 (2022)
The original New Balance 990 is widely considered the first dad shoe ever released. It was also the first running sneaker to cost $100. When answering the question, “What are the best dad shoes of all time?” it definitely deserves top billing. This is especially true when you consider that the latest version, the New Balance 990v6, is still one of the best dad shoes in the business.
Nike Air Pegasus 83

- Originally Released: 1983
- Key Features: Nylon upper with suede overlays, Nike Air cushioning, Rubber waffle outsole
- Subsequent Versions: Nike Air Pegasus (1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023), Nike Air Pegasus 41 (2024), Nike Pegasus Premium (2025)
Long before more modern Nike dad shoes like the Nike Air Monarch IV made their mark, the Nike Air Pegasus 83 put the Swoosh on the map. It was one of the first successful running sneakers from Nike. The shoe came complete with the first-ever “Air Wedge,” which was Nike Air cushioning in the heel designed to absorb shock. It has since continued to evolve to stay relevant in the dad-sneaker world. Updated versions like the Nike Air Pegasus ’89 and the Nike Air Pegasus 2005 now carry the torch.
Reebok Classic Leather

- Originally Released: 1983
- Key Features: Soft garment leather upper, Die-cut EVA midsole, Rubber outsole
- Subsequent Versions: Reebok Classic Nylon (1984)
Reebok really swung for the fences when it chose to call this sneaker the Classic. It’s safe to say the brand connected. The Reebok Classic Leather has been a certified classic since its inception. Its timeless design has remained virtually unchanged for the last 40-plus years.
Saucony Shadow

- Originally Released: 1985
- Key Features: Nylon, mesh, and suede upper, Padded collar and tongue, TPU heel unit
- Subsequent Versions: Saucony Shadow 5000 (1989), Saucony Shadow 6000 (1991), Saucony G9 Shadow 6 (2011)
The Saucony Shadow wasn’t just a solid dad shoe; it was also a great premonition of things to come for Saucony. The Massachusetts-based company dropped the Saucony Shadow 5000 a few years later. It then struck dad-shoe gold with the release of the Saucony Shadow 6000. From its retro runner aesthetic to its neutral colorways to its chunky silhouette, this dad sneaker put Saucony on par with brands like New Balance.
New Balance 574

Originally Released: 1988
Key Features: Suede and mesh upper, ENCAP midsole technology, Wide toe box
Subsequent Versions: New Balance 574 Sport (2018), New Balance 574 Core (2020), New Balance 574 Golf (2021), New Balance 574 Legacy (2022), New Balance 574+ (2022), New Balance Numeric 574 Vulc (2023)
The New Balance 990 was introduced first. However, many people consider the New Balance 574 the best dad shoe ever unveiled by NB. It’s a do-everything dad sneaker routinely referred to as “New Balance’s most iconic and referenced shoe.” It has also been called an “all-time great,” even compared to non-dad sneakers. For all these reasons, it tops many people’s lists when the question, “What are the best dad shoes of all time?” is asked.
New Balance 608

Originally Released: 1990s
Key Features: ABZORB cushioning, Dual-density foam collar, Phantom Liner interior
Subsequent Versions: New Balance 608v2 (2009), New Balance 608v3 (2018), New Balance 608v4 (2018), New Balance 608v5 (2019)
Because of the success of other classic New Balance sneakers released in the 1980s and 1990s, the New Balance 608 is sometimes overlooked by dad shoe enthusiasts. Yet the crispy cross-trainer continues to attract attention, thanks to the ultra-comfortable, supportive New Balance 608v5.
Asics GEL-Lyte III

- Originally Released: 1990
- Key Features: Suede and mesh upper, Split-tongue design, GEL technology cushioning in heel
- Subsequent Versions: GEL-Lyte Ultra (1992), Asics GEL-Lyte V (1993)
The Asics GEL-Lyte III was the first sneaker ever designed by legendary Asics designer Shigeyuki Mitsui. It also took some time for this dad-shoe-to-be to catch on, as it was quickly replaced by the GEL-Lyte Ultra in 1992 before reemerging in 2006 and later in the mid-2010s. Its unique split-tongue and bold colorways eventually helped it stand out.
New Balance 997

Originally Released: 1991
Key Features: Pigskin suede and mesh upper, ENCAP midsole cushioning, XR1000 carbon rubber heel pad
Subsequent Versions: New Balance 997H (2019), New Balance 997 Golf (2024)
Former President (and fellow dad!) Bill Clinton favored the New Balance 997 back in the early 1990s. He routinely jogged in them while serving as the leader of the free world. This dad-shoe-in-training was actually taken out of production in 1994 and disappeared for about two decades. But it later reemerged as the New Balance 997H, a more modernized, budget-friendly version that has earned a cult following in its own right.
Nike Air Huarache

Originally Released: 1991
Key Features: Neoprene and spandex sock liner, TPU exoskeleton heel strap, Phylon foam midsole
Subsequent Versions: Nike Air Trainer Huarache (1992), Nike Air Flight Huarache (1992), Nike Air Huarache Light (1993), Nike Huarache 2K4 (2004), Nike Huarache 2K5 (2005), Nike Air Huarache Drift (2017), Nike Air Adapt Huarache (2019), Nike Air Huarache Craft (2023)
Not everyone includes the Nike Air Huarache when answering the question, “What are the best dad shoes of all time?” It isn’t necessarily considered a dad sneaker in some circles, since it doesn’t feature many of the usual factors found in most dad shoes, such as an overly chunky sole. However, it has consistently made a huge impact on the sneaker community, thanks to its nostalgic, yet ahead-of-its-time “sock-like” neoprene design. So we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to give the iconic Huarache its flowers.
New Balance 530

Originally Released: 1992
Key Features: Mesh upper with synthetic overlays, ABZORB foam cushioning, Rubber outsole with segmented pods
Subsequent Versions: N/A
The New Balance 530 is one of the few New Balance sneakers on this “What are the best dad shoes of all time?” list that wasn’t an instant success. Its ABZORB midsole technology made it every bit as comfortable as other NB sneakers at the time. But it still took about a decade for it to gain a proper cult following. Its versatility, not to mention its wide range of colorways, eventually earned it respect from dad shoe wearers.
Reebok Aztrek

Originally Released: 1993
Key Features: Nylon mesh and synthetic suede upper, Hexalite hexagonal midsole cushioning, Diamond-studded rubber outsole
Subsequent Versions: Reebok Aztrek R58 (2018), Reebok Aztrek 96 (2019), Reebok Aztrek OG (2019), Reebok Aztrek Double (2019)
Introduced over a decade after one of the most memorable sneakers that Reebok would ever release, the Reebok Aztrek couldn’t have been any different from the Classic. Yet, its ’90s-inspired aesthetic, chunky silhouette, and Hexalite cushioning technology all helped it stand out. Some experts now call it an “unsung hero of 90s sneakers.”
Nike Air Max 95

Originally Released: 1995
Key Features: Anatomy-inspired suede upper with synthetic overlays, Dual-pressure Air-Sole units, Reflective materials in heel
Subsequent Versions: Nike Air Max 97 (1997), Nike Air Max Plus (1998), Nike Air Max 360 (2006), Nike Air VaporMax (2017), Nike Air Max 270 (2018), Nike Air Max 720 (2019), Nike Air Max 200 (2019), Nike Air Max 2090 (2020), Nike Air Max Scorpion (2022), Nike Air Max Pulse (2023), Nike Air Max DN (2024)
When Gen Zers started asking, “Is the Nike Air Force 1 a dad shoe?” last year, we didn’t see it. We were also initially hesitant to include the Nike Air Max 95 on a list of the best dad shoes of all time, but it has always had the dad shoe aesthetic down pat, hasn’t it? Much as it pains us to say this, the Air Max 95 is all grown up and deserves a dad shoe nod.
Adidas Ozweego

Originally Released: 1996
Key Features: Mesh upper with suede overlays, adiPRENE cushioning technology, Nylon lacing system
Subsequent Versions: Adidas Ozweego 2 (1997), Adidas Ozweego 3 (1998), Adidas Ozweego 4 (1999), Adidas Ozweego Celox (2021), Adidas Ozweego Pure (2021), Adidas Ozweego Millennium (2023), Adidas Ozmillen (2023)
The Adidas Ozweego is one of the first dad sneakers that comes to mind when we consider the question, “What are the best dad shoes of all time?” for sentimental reasons. Quietly, it’s also one of the longest-running Adidas sneakers. It has gradually evolved into one of the top dad shoes overall from the 3 Stripes.
Adidas Falcon Dorf

- Originally Released: 1997
- Key Features: Mesh upper with suede and nubuck overlays, Torsion stability system, Bold colorways
- Subsequent Versions: Adidas Originals Falcon W (2018), Adidas Yung-1 (2018)
Adidas running sneakers hit their stride in the late 1990s, led by chunky, layered, dad shoe-esque options like the Adidas Falcon Dorf. We would argue it didn’t necessarily get the respect it deserved back then. But it certainly turned heads when it returned in 2018. It re-emerged as the women’s-exclusive Adidas Originals Falcon W promoted by Kylie Jenner. Then, it returned as the Falcon-inspired Adidas Yung-1 (seen above). The Adidas Yung-96, a looser interpretation of the Falcon and a more affordable version of the Yung-1, was also released in 2018.
Asics GEL-Kayano 5

- Originally Released: 1999
- Key Features: Mesh upper with premium leather and suede overlays, Supportive DuoMax midsole with GEL cushioning, Bold branding with 3M reflectivity
- Subsequent Versions: Asics GEL-Kayano 6 (2000) to Asics GEL-Kayano 25 (2025)
Spoiler alert: The Asics GEL-Kayano 5 isn’t the only Asics GEL-Kayano dad shoe on this list. There is one other option included here. However, this is ultimately the one with the better dad shoe design, as it’s slightly bulkier and heavier. It also helped set the stage for many of the GEL-Kayanos that followed.
Brooks Adrenaline GTS

- Originally Released: 1999
- Key Features: Mesh upper with synthetic overlays, Traditional medial post, Rubber compound outsole
- Subsequent Versions: Brooks Adrenaline GTS 2 (2000) to Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 (2025)
The original Brooks Adrenaline GTS was a serious running sneaker, developed almost entirely in response to requests from specialty running shops. Over 25 years later, it remains a surefire running shoe, but it has also become a top-tier dad sneaker. The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25’s classic dad sneaker aesthetic, coupled with its all-day comfort, makes it versatile enough to keep up with distance runners and dads alike.
Skechers Energy

Originally Released: 1999
Key Features: Smooth leather upper, Supportive shock-absorbing midsole, Rubber outsole
Subsequent Versions: Skechers Energy Afterburn (2006), Skechers D’Lites (2007)
Skechers didn’t seem to have dads in mind when it initially introduced its iconic Energy sneaker, seeing as how they hired Britney Speakers to help promote it. However, it started to look like dads might be the brand’s target market when the Skechers Energy Afterburn was released less than a decade later. Quietly, this dad shoe is one of the most popular models ever released, having earned well over 40,000 five-star ratings at Amazon.
Adidas Supernova Cushion 7

- Originally Released: Early 2000s
- Key Features: Mesh upper with synthetic overlays, adiPRENE cushioning technology, Torsion stability system
- Subsequent Versions: Adidas Supernova Rise (2023), Adidas Supernova Prima (2024), Adidas Supernova Ease (2024)
The original Adidas Supernova was released in 1998. It wasn’t exactly the most exciting or most aesthetically pleasing sneaker, which is why it doesn’t always come to mind when considering the question, “What are the best dad shoes of all time?” However, it inspired an entire collection of comfortable and supportive daily running shoes. It also led to the launch of the Adidas Supernova Cushion 7, which was stylish enough to be re-released in the 2020s.
Saucony Ride Millennium

- Originally Released: Early 2000s
- Key Features: Mesh upper with synthetic overlays, Grid cushioning technology, Padded collar and tongue
- Subsequent Versions: Saucony Ride (2007) to Saucony Ride 19 (2026)
The Saucony Ride Millennium included many elements that gave it a decidedly early-2000s feel. Many early dad shoe enthusiasts also appreciated its breathable, lightweight upper and dependable support, making it a great everyday option.
Saucony Grid Jazz 9

- Originally Released: Mid 2000s
- Key Features: Mesh upper with suede overlays, GRID cushioning technology in midsole, Textured rubber outsole
- Subsequent Versions: N/A
The Saucony Jazz Original dates back to 1981, when it was released as a lightweight running shoe, and it deserves respect in its own right. But the retro-inspired Saucony Grid Jazz 9 later stole the spotlight from its predecessor. The sneaker established itself as the superior dad shoe with its chunkier sole and more dad-friendly design.
New Balance 991

- Originally Released: 2001
- Key Features: Mesh and suede upper, Dual-layer ABZORB cushioning in forefoot and heel, N-Durance rubber outsole
- Subsequent Versions: New Balance 991v2 (2023)
The New Balance 991 isn’t quite as popular as some of the other New Balance dad shoes, and it shouldn’t take long to figure out why. They initially retailed for around $250, and the New Balance 991v2 continues to sell for that much in many stores today. It’s also easy to see why they cost so much, as they’re handcrafted in the UK out of some of the highest-quality suede and leather materials. Still, if you can afford to pick up a pair, they’re second to none.
K-Swiss ST329

- Originally Released: 2002
- Key Features: Full leather upper, Comfort Memory Foam cushioning system, Rubber outsole
- Subsequent Versions: N/A
The K-Swiss ST329 CMF was the first dad shoe ever featured in our “Dad Shoe Discounts” section — and for good reason. The design of its unmistakable upper makes it one of the most unique dad shoes ever. The fact that it’s still around almost 25 years following its initial release highlights how impactful it has been. It also shows why a K-Swiss sneaker belongs on a list that answers the question, “What are the best dad shoes of all time?”
Reebok Premier Trinity

- Originally Released: 2006
- Key Features: Mesh upper with synthetic leather and suede overlays, DMX Ride foam midsole, Rubber outsole with traction lugs
- Subsequent Versions: Reebok Premier Trinity KFS (2024)
The Reebok Premier Trinity flew under the radar for many years following its release two decades ago. It catered more to those in the running community than those in the dad shoe universe. Yet, it hung around long enough to blossom into an excellent example of what a dad sneaker should be once the dad shoe craze started, complete with a basic design and minimalist branding.
Asics GEL-Nimbus 9

- Originally Released: 2007
- Key Features: Structured mesh upper with synthetic overlays, Visible GEL cushioning, Dense rubber outsole
- Subsequent Versions: Asics GEL-Nimbus 10 (2008) to Asics GEL-Nimbus 28 (2026), Asics GEL-Nimbus Lite (2020)
Inspired by cumulonimbus clouds, the original ASICS GEL-Nimbus was released in 1999 to much fanfare among runners. They loved everything from its premium materials to its highly cushionized midsole. But it’s the Asics GEL-Nimbus 9, with its patented Y2K aesthetic and overexaggerated features, that elevated the model and made it one of the most fashionable dad shoes of the 2010s.
Mizuno Wave Rider 10

- Originally Released: 2007
- Key Features: Mesh upper with premium suede overlays, Structural plate in midsole for cushioning and stability, X10 carbon rubber outsole
- Subsequent Versions: Mizuno Wave Rider 11 (2008) to Mizuno Wave Rider 29 (2025)
Of all the dad shoes found here, this one might just be the most underrated. The Mizuno Wave Rider 10 was released in 2007 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the original Wave Rider and its innovative Wave Plate. And even though the 1997 version wasn’t a huge hit, the anniversary version was, thanks to its Y2K aesthetic and upgraded thermoplastic insert. The Wave Rider is still around, too, most recently taking the form of the Mizuno Wave Rider 29.
Saucony ProGrid Triumph 4

- Originally Released: 2007
- Key Features: Open-mesh upper, ProGrid cushioning technology, Arch-Lock support technology
- Subsequent Versions: Saucony ProGrid Triumph 4 Gorpcore (2023), Saucony ProGrid Triumph 4 Heritage (2024), Saucony ProGrid Triumph 4 Premium (2025)
You could argue Saucony’s golden age occurred during the early 2000s, when the Saucony Grid Jazz 9 and Saucony Ride Millennium were stealing the show from other early dad shoes. But the Saucony ProGrid Triumph 4 could go down as the brand’s best dad shoe of all time. It combined a “dad-core” design with technological touches, like its ProGrid cushioning, that enhanced Saucony’s dad sneaker efforts.
Asics GEL-Kayano 14

- Originally Released: 2008
- Key Features: Layered mesh and synthetic suede upper, Visible GEL cushioning, Supportive molded plastic cage
- Subsequent Versions: Asics GEL-Kayano Lite (2020), Asics GEL-Kayano Ace (2022)
Legendary sneaker designer Toshikazu Kayano brought the original Asics GEL-Kayano to life in 1993. But ironically, it was the first GEL-Kayano that he didn’t design, the Asics GEL-Kayano 14, that is the best GEL-Kayano model in the eyes of many, including those who appreciated its Y2K-friendly design. It explains why the brand re-released the sneaker in 2020 with minor tweaks from designer Kiko Kostadinov.
New Balance 992

- Originally Released: 2006
- Key Features: Mesh and suede upper, ABZORB cushioning technology, NDurance rubber outsole
- Subsequent Versions: N/A
Released to celebrate New Balance’s 100th anniversary, the New Balance 992 was the first sneaker from NB’s 99X series to feature the brand’s ABZORB SBS cushioning in the forefoot and heel. It was also the preferred New Balance dad shoe of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who frequently wore it during his epic Apple keynote presentations.
New Balance 993

- Originally Released: 2008
- Key Features: Pigskin suede and mesh upper, ABZORB DTS (Dynamic Transition System) midsole, Ndurance rubber outsole
- Subsequent Versions: N/A
The New Balance 993 had a similar look and feel to the New Balance 992, often leading some people to mistake one for the other. But upon further review, the 993 was slightly slimmer and more technologically advanced than the 992. Both are a part of NB’s “Made in USA” collection, though, and they’re also both worthwhile answers to the question, “What are the best dad shoes of all time?”
Nike Air Monarch IV

- Originally Released: 2009
- Key Features: Perforated leather upper, Phylon midsole, Full-length Air-Sole unit
- Subsequent Versions: N/A
If we were ranking this list of the best dad shoes of all time rather than listing the leading dad sneakers chronologically, the Nike Air Monarch IV would definitely land much higher. It might even reach the top spot, seeing as how it’s often referred to as the quintessential dad shoe. When you picture a dad sneaker in your head, there’s a decent chance this is the one that comes to mind immediately.
New Balance 1906

- Originally Released: 2009
- Key Features: Mesh upper with synthetic overlays, ABZORB heel cushioning, N-ergy gel technology
- Subsequent Versions: New Balance 1906R (2022)
The New Balance dad shoe lineup is so strong that certain models like the New Balance 1906 sometimes get lost in the shuffle. But make no mistake about it: Both the 1906 and the New Balance 1906R are among the best dad shoes ever released, despite sometimes being overshadowed by the more classic NB dad sneakers. The 1906R, in particular, helped put this silhouette back on the map when NB introduced it in the early 2020s.
Under Armour Apparition

- Originally Released: 2009
- Key Features: Mesh upper with synthetic and leather overlays, Cartilage stability and support system, Rubber outsole
- Subsequent Versions: Under Armour HOVR Apparition (2024)
Founded in 1996, Under Armour was still in its infancy when many of the most iconic running sneakers-turned-dad shoes were released back at the turn of the century. But that didn’t stop the brand from cooking up the Under Armour Apparition, which looked like a Y2K-era dad sneaker with its chunky silhouette and metallic overlays. UA also modernized it and made it more comfortable 15 years after its first release, introducing the Under Armour HOVR Apparition, which was even better received.
Hoka Bondi

- Originally Released: 2011
- Key Features: Mesh upper, Oversized EVA midsole, Early meta-rocker technology
- Subsequent Versions: Hoka Bondi 2 (2013) to Hoka Bondi 9 (2025)
Just about all dad shoes have chunky silhouettes, but Hoka has taken this to the next level over the last 15 years with its Bondi lineup. The soles on its dad sneakers are enormous, even by dad shoe standards. You can trace them back to the first Hoka Bondi, known as the Bondi B. It has been referred to as “the shoe that started a movement,” thanks to its unusually thick soles that just seem to keep growing with each passing iteration of the game-changing Bondi sneaker.
New Balance 2002

- Originally Released: 2010
- Key Features: Mesh and nubuck upper, Full-length N-ergy gel cushioning, Stability Web technology in the outsole
- Subsequent Versions: New Balance 2002R (2020)
The bottom half of the New Balance 2002 looked familiar when it was initially released, since it shared many of the same midsole and outsole features with the New Balance 1906. However, NB’s use of suede on the 2002’s upper, combined with its chunkier design, separated it from the 1906. This became even more evident in 2020, when NB re-released the 2002 as the New Balance 2002R a decade after its initial introduction.
Nike Zoom Vomero 5

- Originally Released: 2010
- Key Features: Layered mesh and synthetic leather upper, Supportive TPU cage, Zoom Air cushioning in the heel
- Subsequent Versions: Nike Zoom Vomero 6 (2012), Nike Zoom Vomero 7 (2012), Nike Air Zoom Vomero 8 (2014), Nike Air Zoom Vomero 9 (2014), Nike Air Zoom Vomero 10 (2015), Nike Air Zoom Vomero 11 (2016), Nike Air Zoom Vomero 12 (2017), Nike Zoom Vomero 13 (2017), Nike Zoom Vomero 14 (2018), Nike Air Zoom Vomero 15 (2020), Nike Vomero 16 (2021), Nike Vomero 17 (2023), Nike Vomero 18 (2025), Nike Vomero Plus (2025)
LeBron James wears his own signature sneakers when he’s on the basketball court. But when he’s off it, he’s known to rock the Nike Zoom Vomero 5. It’s hard to blame him, considering it’s the perfect blend of Y2K nostalgia and modern sneaker technology. What other dad shoes would you expect to find on the famous father of three’s feet?
New Balance 860

- Originally Released: 2011
- Key Features: Mesh upper with synthetic overlays, ABZORB cushioning in midfoot, N-Durance rubber outsole
- Subsequent Versions: New Balance 860v2 (2012) to New Balance 860v15 (2026)
The original New Balance 860 was designed to be the ideal daily running and walking shoe, and it continues to live up to that billing. It has always provided reliable stability, comfort, and support. It has also proven extremely durable, with some people putting 500 miles or more on their shoes before they require replacement.
Adidas Yeezy Boost 700

- Originally Released: 2017
- Key Features: Mesh and leather upper with suede overlays, Full-length Boost cushioning, Rubber herringbone-patterned outsole
- Subsequent Versions: Adidas Yeezy Boost 700 V2 (2018), Adidas Yeezy Boost 700 V3 (2019), Adidas Yeezy Boost 700 MNVN (2020)
Rumor has it that it only took Kanye West and well-respected sneaker designer Steven Smith about 48 hours to come up with the design for the Adidas Yeezy Boost 700. It’s often credited with pouring gasoline on the red-hot dad shoe trend, which reached its peak in 2017 and 2018, helping it secure mainstream popularity and sparking questions like, “What are the best dad shoes of all time?”
Balenciaga Triple S

- Originally Released: 2017
- Key Features: Complex mesh, leather, and nubuck upper, Multi-tiered outsole, Heavyweight design
- Subsequent Versions: Balenciaga Triple S.2 (2025)
The Balenciaga Triple S has been described as an “exciting assault on the eyes,” and we think that about sums it up. It mashed together the soles of basketball, running, and track sneakers to create designer dad shoes unlike any others ever released.
Fila Disruptor II

- Originally Released: 2018
- Key Features: Soft leather upper, Padded collar and tongue, Jagged “shark tooth” rubber outsole
- Subsequent Versions: N/A
The Fila Disruptor II was, well, how do we put this? Ugly! (and we mean that in the nicest way possible!) It was so ugly, in fact, that even when it was riding high in terms of popularity in 2018, a high-ranking Fila employee admitted that some people within the company referred to it as ugly behind the scenes. It has faded from the public eye in recent years, but it remains one of the most polarizing and talked-about dad shoes of all time.
Nike M2K Tekno

- Originally Released: 2018
- Key Features: Layered leather and synthetic upper, Phylon foam cushioning, Padded tongue and collar
- Subsequent Versions: N/A
“Wait, don’t I know you from somewhere?” was the question that went through many people’s minds after laying eyes on the Nike M2K Tekno for the first time. The answer was “yes,” with this dad shoe drawing inspiration from the Nike Air Monarch dad sneakers. It had a more complex upper than the Monarchs, along with futuristic features that Nike never would have incorporated into its dad-shoe staple. But it was still cool to see the Swoosh’s modernized take on it come to life.
Puma Thunder Spectra

- Originally Released: 2018
- Key Features: Layered mesh, leather, and nubuck upper, Bold color blocking, Molded TPU system
- Subsequent Versions: N/A
At a time when many high-end designers were experimenting with various dad shoe designs and charging dad sneaker enthusiasts a small fortune for the privilege of wearing them, the Puma Thunder Spectra offered a worthwhile alternative. It was reportedly inspired by the Puma Tech Runner Mid Alexander McQueen, a stylish dad shoe that emerged from Puma’s long-standing partnership with McQueen. It looked like a more luxurious dad shoe for just a fraction of what top-notch designers were charging for their dad-sneaker interpretations.

- Key Features: Layered mesh, leather and suede upper, EVA foam midsole, Molded TPU heel
- Subsequent Versions: Under Armour Forge 96 Leather (2023)
Although the Under Armour Apparition was released long before it, the Under Armour Forge 96 sits slightly above it in the upper echelon of UA’s dad shoes. It was inspired by 1996, the year UA was founded, and the brand poured all its best premium materials and design ideas into it to put the dad sneaker over the top. UA also provided fans of this dad shoe with an Under Armour Forge 96 Leather version about five years later.
Puma RS-X

- Originally Released: 2018
- Key Features: Mesh, leather, and suede upper, Running System technology, Bright colorways
- Subsequent Versions: Puma RS-X3 (2019), Puma RS-X Mid (2019), Puma RS-X Efekt (2023)
The aforementioned Puma Thunder Spectra wasn’t the only Puma dad shoe to emerge in 2018. The Puma RS-X was also released that year. Much like the Thunder Spectra, it had a higher-end appearance than many other dad shoes. As sneaker publications such as Sneaker Freaker have pointed out, Puma probably deserves more credit for its role in popularizing dad shoes than it receives.
Nike P-6000

- Originally Released: 2019
- Key Features: Mesh upper with leather overlays, “Bowerman Series” branding, Rubber outsole with waffle pattern
- Subsequent Versions: Nike P-6000 Premium (2023), Nike P-6000 Utility (2025)
Remember the Nike Air Pegasus 83 that we alluded to earlier when we were initially trying to answer the question, “What are the best dad shoes of all time?” The success of the Nike P-6000 further showcases its impact. The original Pegasus inspired dozens of other Pegasus models, and the P-6000 borrows elements from several, including the 2006 Nike Air Pegasus. It mashes them all together to create a Y2K-inspired lifestyle sneaker.
Adidas Response CL

- Originally Released: 2020
- Key Features: Mesh upper with synthetic suede overlays, EVA foam midsole, adiPRENE cushioning and Torsion stability technologies
- Subsequent Versions: Adidas Response Trail (2024)
Throughout the first half of the 2020s, Adidas has been one of the most aggressive sneaker brands in designing new dad shoes that look like they could have been released 25 years ago. Take the Adidas Response CL, for example. It was inspired by 2003’s Adidas Response Cushion and appears to be a dad sneaker that easily could have emerged in the late 1990s or early 2000s.
Adidas Strutter

- Originally Released: 2020
- Key Features: Smooth leather upper, adiBounce EVA sockliner, Rubber outsole
- Subsequent Versions: N/A
Similar to the Adidas Response CL, the Adidas Strutter is another solid example of Adidas designing a dad shoe that looks much newer than it is. Its stereotypical dad-sneaker design might give you the impression that Adidas released it long ago and brought it back, but that’s not the case.
Skechers Arch Fit

- Originally Released: 2020
- Key Features: Mesh upper, Podiatrist-approved insole system, Rubber traction outsole
- Subsequent Versions: Skechers Go Walk Arch Fit (2020), Skechers Hands-Free Slip-Ins Arch Fit (2023), Skechers Arch Fit 2.0 (2023), Skechers Go Walk Arch Fit 2.0 (2023)
Skechers Arch Fit is “a podiatrist-certified insole and arch support system” and not necessarily a specific Skechers shoe. It’s based on 20 years of data collected by the brand, along with over 120,000 foot scans. Skechers has incorporated it into everything from the Skechers Arch Fit Summits to the Skechers Arch Fit Garza-Chapman slip-ins.
New Balance 9060

- Originally Released: 2022
- Key Features: Mesh upper with pigskin suede overlays, Dual-density ABZORB and SBS midsole cushioning, Diamond-shaped rubber outsole
- Subsequent Versions: New Balance 9060X (2025)
New Balance spent the majority of the 2010s re-releasing existing models in new colorways, collaborating with other brands like Concepts and J.Crew, and putting together upgraded versions of some of its classics. It got back to doing what it does best toward the start of the 2020s, with the introduction of the New Balance 9060. Inspired by the New Balance 99X Series, it blended Y2K running aesthetics with many modernized features and sparked a “retro-futurism” trend.
Nike V2K Run

- Originally Released: 2023
- Key Features: Mesh upper with metallic overlays, Dual-density foam midsole, Rubber outsole with waffle-inspired pattern
- Subsequent Versions: Nike V2K Run Gore-Tex (2024)
The Nike V2K Run drew inspiration from the Nike Zoom Vomero 5 that emerged nearly a decade before its release. Yet it offered a few defining features that separated it from its predecessor. It’s slightly slimmer than the Vomero, comes equipped with a dual-density foam midsole for comfort, and provides a more affordable price point to boot.
Jordan Trunner O/S

- Originally Released: 2025
- Key Features: Layered mesh and suede upper, Molded TPU support wings, Reflective 3M accents
- Subsequent Versions: N/A
Somewhat surprisingly, Jordan Brand hasn’t experimented much with dad shoes. But just before dropping the Air Jordan 3 “World’s Best Dad” in 2026, it unveiled the brand’s best dad shoe to date, the Jordan Trunner O/S. The “O/S” stands for “Old School,” which makes sense when you consider that it’s inspired by the Jordan Trunner LX, which first appeared in stores in 2000.
